Remotely read water meters

We started installing remotely read water meters in properties within our service area in autumn 2026. The remotely read water meter makes the monitoring and invoicing of water consumption easier and more up-to-date. The transition to remote reading of water meters is expected to continue until the end of 2031.

Remote reading brings the measurement of water consumption to the digital era

Until now, water meters have been used to measure water consumption, and the readings of these meters have been reported to HSY at least once a year. The remotely read water meter sends water consumption data to HSY automatically and securely, which means that you will no longer need to report water meter readings to us, unless we specifically request them in exceptional situations, and you will receive a bill based on your actual water consumption. The previous estimated and adjustment bills will be a thing of the past.

A remotely read water meter also enables more detailed monitoring of water consumption than before, both for you with regard to your property and for us throughout our water supply network.

Remotely read water meters will be installed gradually

The installation of remotely read water meters started gradually in autumn 2026:

  • In 2026–2028, the meters will be replaced for the largest water consumers, such as apartment buildings, terraced houses and industrial buildings.
  • In 2028–2031, the meters will be replaced for the smallest water consumers, such as detached and semi-detached houses.
  • Remotely read water meters will be installed in new buildings as of autumn 2026, regardless of the property type and water consumption.

We will inform directly the customers affected by the water meter replacement about the installation schedule. Below, you will also find an indicative installation schedule for the coming months, as well as answers to the most frequently asked questions about remotely read water meters.

Installation schedule

Below you will find an indicative installation schedule by city. When work begins in a specific postal code area, we will contact the customers affected by the water meter replacement.

Please note that remotely read water meters are not yet being replaced in detached or semi-detached houses at this stage, and our customer service cannot influence the installation schedule. We cannot take individual properties into account when planning the installation schedule.

To ensure that the meter replacement goes smoothly, please check well in advance that the shut-off valves on both sides of the water meter are functioning properly and order replacement of the valves if necessary. Please also ensure that there is sufficient working space in the water meter room for the replacement work and that the HSY installer can access the water meter room at the agreed time. Please also take any pets into consideration during the replacement work.
